Chugach Alaska

The area of Chugach Alaska is a national forest spanning 5.4 million acres of land. This forest can be found in the mountains around the Kenai Peninsula, Prince William Sound and the Copper River delta. Chugach National Forest is the second largest of its kind in the U.S. and the furthest north. A third of the forest is icy and rocky. The supervising officer of the forest is not headquartered in Chugach, but rather in the city of Anchorage.

Chugach became a national park in 1907 when Theodore Roosevelt was in office. The original size of the forest was a whopping 23 million acres of land. There are 90 miles of Forest Service roads at the current time, and the majority of the forest is untamed and unspoiled. However, no portion of it is officially declared wilderness although this description would surely fit. Parts of the forest reach areas of the Kenai Peninsula Borough, city of Anchorage, Kodiak Island Borough and several other communities.

The climate of this forest can best be described as a temperate rainforest. It occupies a small area between the ocean and the alpine zone which is called the sub-polar rainforest. Here you will see majestic Sitka spruce and hemlock trees. Because of the varying ecosystems you will find a range of wildlife depending on where you are. In some areas of the park, you can take whale watching trips and see majestic ocean creatures. You might also spot caribou, sheep and even wolves on the banks and in the forest. This area is also home to birds like the bald eagle and various botanical life.

When it comes to activities in Chugach Alaska, you will find hiking a popular choice. As mentioned previously, whale watching boat tours are also commonly enjoyed by visitors. You can even take helicopter rides which give you a birds eye view of the spectacular scenery. No matter how you choose to explore this region you will find amazing beauty and majesty around every corner. If you want to learn more about this national park or any of its surrounding areas, there are books and websites devoted to Alaskan travel. Your travel agent can help you plan the perfect trip to the Chugach National Park or any other areas you want to visit.
